Handling the Word Precisely

Bible-coffee1.jpg

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

As a registered dental hygienist I must handle razor-sharp instruments specifically designed for  each area of the mouth with utmost precision and care. If not, I could inflict pain or injury upon my patients. An inattentive moment or careless hand movement would cause trauma to delicate tissues. Handled correctly, my instruments allow me to remove bacteria that can hurt my patients’ overall health. Years of training go into making sure I carefully treat my patients without causing harm.

Just as I needed to be trained to skillfully handle instruments, even more so do we need to study to handle God’s Word with precision. Using it out of context can cause more damage than good as God’s truths are misapplied. Misusing a verse or passage does not lead to spiritual health but rather causes harm to the hearers. However, correctly handled God’s Word has the power to convict us of sin and teach, guide and comfort us. Ultimately it leads to our salvation and sanctification as we come to know His Word rightly and receive Him in truth.

“Father, guide me into all truth by Your Holy Spirit as I study and rightly divide Your Word.”
